I was in a fishing store last month when a row full of colorful spinners caught my eye, and I couldn’t get the idea of earrings out of my head. Some had a beachy surfboard look, while other more fluorescent ones had eighties flair. I regret not buying some of the funkier spinners, but for now these earrings are a good reminder that jewelry can be made from anything. If you find yourself looking at spinners, be sure to check the packaging. Some spinners contain lead.
I have made quite a few pairs of earrings from fishing lure parts over the years. You can buy the spinner parts by themselves instead of buying a finished lure and then you don’t have to deal with a hook.
There are so many great jewelry inspirations to be found in the fishing store, especially if they have a fly-tying department. The lead warnings on fishing gear are a lot like peanut warnings – actual lead content is usually non-existent. The staff can tell you which products are made with lead, but when in doubt, a coat or two of clear nail polish can’t hurt!
I think that is a great idea! Kudos to you for discovering it. I never go into fishing departments even though I live right off the lake. I guess I will give it a try.
